truefalseandmeaningless:dofouriac:tomek szmulewiczI saw many memorable, harsher, more intense things this weekend (ask!) but this piece of memory is more firmly lodged, still, in my mind. A stranger, she sat in the middle of the gazebo as we circled around her, picking strands of a particular color of her braids (green-blue, teal, pink-orange, red-yellow, purple-blonde, so many colors) to tie off with a ribbon and cut. She was going to give some of the braids to friends and family, some to keep for herself. One was going to be used for a bullwhip popper, too. She was asking friends and loved ones to cut her hair. I knew three people in the gazebo at most and she still invited me in and smiled as I approached with scissors, shy hello stuck between my teeth. Once we cut all her braids off another person came up and proceeded to shave her head with a straight edge razor. There was hardly any blood. He scraped it up and down her skull in small, controlled movements and she sat still and grinned and cried. We sang pieces from Sweeney Todd and The Barber of Seville. Were I closer I could probably hear the ssshk, ssshk of the razor as it traveled its course. This photo shows an electric razor, yes, but it brings me back to that moment of catharsis and vulnerability in an instant.
